Byline: ROGER HART
The phrase ``beauty is only skin deep'' was probably never meant to be directed toward a car, but if it were used to describe the Avelate C5 Corvette conversion, they'd be dead wrong. No question, the 20 coats of candy-red paint hand applied by Avelate co-owner Dean Arnold over custom body panels is beautiful, but the conversion is more than just a handcrafted body, custom leather seats and trim.
Avelate also adds a Magnuson supercharger that pumps up the horsepower of the 5.7-liter pushrod V8 from 350 (261 lb-ft) in the base LS1 motor to 490 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. A Flowmaster exhaust also allows the motor to breathe easier.
The engine tuning drops the 0-to-60-mph time to 3.7 seconds, with the quarter-mile coming in 11.7 seconds. (For comparison's sake, our last AutoFile test of a 405-hp Z06 saw 0 to 60 mph in 4.31 seconds with the quarter-mile coming in 12.73 seconds.)
