Marine downshifts as Ford buys auto business

Marine Midland Banks Inc. and Ford Motor Co. are two companies headed in opposite directions.

Buffalo-based Marine Midland Banks is going through a radical restructuring by pulling back in size and scope from a money center bank and shrinking to super regional status at a time many other banks also are retrenching to rebuild strength.

Ford, meanwhile, is driving to become bigger and more diversified in Marine Midland's own field, banking.

Even if you haven't driven a Ford lately, you may well have banked with the company. The nation's second-largest automaker is already the nation's second-largest bank -- if you stretch the definition.
