The Japan Franchise Association reports that the nation's 1048 franchise chains enjoyed overall sales growth of 3.3% to 17.76 trillion yen in FY2000, and the number of franchise stores grew by 3.2% to 201,499. The group concludes that franchise businesses had a solid year of growth despite a poor economy. It performed its study in June and July on its 220 member companies and other businesses known to be franchisers. The dining-out sector, which includes 381 chains, showed the greatest rate of growth in new shops, which increased 4.8% to 46,012 outlets.
