An Aug. 14 appellate court ruling in Los Angeles has extended a decade-long trend of shielding general contractors from liability claims brought by subcontractor's employees.

In finding that Santa Monica-based Peck/Jones Construction Corp. had not contributed to injuries suffered by a subcontractor's employee during the renovation of the Sherman Oaks Galleria, the court has paved the way for the state Supreme Court to hear a case that could further shield general contractors.

Richard Barone, who represents the worker hired by Covina-based Cleveland Wrecking Co. in 1999 to work on the demolition of part of the Galleria, said that in the past his client could have easily won his case. But today, his chances of success are …
