If the Indy Racing League didn't have a major-league championship hunt before Sunday's race at Gateway International Raceway, it does now. The 1-2 finish of Team Penske drivers Gil de Ferran and Helio Castroneves in the Gateway Indy 250 has them within a point of one another on the leader board with two races to go.
So tight is the battle that moments after Sunday's race, de Ferran picked up a stat sheet and shot his eyes immediately to the bottom line. Not the part about first and second; the graphic that displayed laps led in the race. Castroneves led 85, four more than de Ferran. That earned the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner the additional two points. As de Ferran promptly processed, that's the difference between first and second.
``Hmmm,'' de Ferran said, realizing that a points-paying opportunity had slipped away.
De Ferran also glanced at the points distance back to Sam Hornish Jr. in third place. He calculated just eight points from Castroneves down to Hornish. Not much, really. Not much at all, actually. ``The championship is open to anyone,'' said de Ferran, trying to three-peat with his consecutive CART titles thrown in.
The IRL's final two races of the 15-race season are Sept. 8 at Joliet, Illinois, and Sept. 15 at Fort Worth, Texas. Hornish is the defending champ of the latter and consistently the stronger of the three drivers on the ...
