Nick Garritano is the new girls golf coach at Green Valley High. But he's been around the Henderson school long enough to have a sense of history.
The Gators are seven victories away from breaking a national high school record of 128 consecutive dual matches won. Garritano has discussed this with the girls and has gotten the sense that they are excited to be a part of history.
"We're at 121 (wins) and counting," Garritano said before the Gators beat Basic in the season opener Thursday. "These girls know they have the opportunity to break a record. They understand they need to keep it going. The girls put in time during the summer. They have a very strong tradition. We'll hope for the best."
With the girls Garritano has available, his biggest problem could be deciding which six to use in matches. Simply, Green Valley has the talent to make it through yet another unbeaten season and replace two-time defending state champion Durango as the top team in Nevada.
Green Valley figures to face a stern test in its division from Silverado. The Skyhawks graduated three seniors but still have other talented golfers.
