Going for the Gold

IGOR STRAVINSKY'S CHAMBER CONCERTO, "DUMBARTON Oaks," opens freshly and urgently with springlike energy and intelligent brightness that recall blossoms, ambitious pursuits, and inspired endeavors. It's an appropriate tone for the work's namesake, the estate at which it was first performed in 1938.

Fifty years ago November, the last private owners of Dumbarton Oaks offered the estate to the public. Today, Dumbarton Oaks, according to its director, Angeliki Laiou, seeks to fulfill the Bliss family's wish that "the beautiful house and beautiful grounds and garden would all work together with scholarship to create an environment in which people could have free discussion and intellectual adventure."
