In my childhood, with the exception of those occurring in church, attempts to employ the "honor system" in commercial transactions just didn't seem to work very well.

Doesn't it just seem like some people are always trying to get a bit of an advantage to which they have no honest claim?

So when candy bars would be out on a table with a dish with a sign for 10 cents (I'm showing my age), the candy bars always seemed to disappear without a corresponding increase in dimes. Either someone was stealing the candy bars, or the dimes, or maybe a little of both.
