The Streamlined Sales Tax Project (SSTP) approved a proposal on June 14 that would permit each state to determine which state taxes should be subject to the provisions in the SSTP simplification package.
Under the approved proposal, states that have transaction taxes above and beyond their general sales and use taxes--for instance, states with special hotel or tourism taxes--could decide for themselves whether those other transaction taxes are sufficiently similar to their general sales and use taxes that they should be required to conform with the SSTP proposals.
