Mandela Welcomed on U.S. Visit, Wants Sanctions Continued

Nelson Mandela, the African National Congress leader and fighter for freedom of the oppressed majority in South Africa, in his triumphant visit to the U.S. in July called for a renewed commitment by all Americans to continue the sanctions that have begun to dismantle apartheid in his homeland.

The struggle is far from over, he told cheering crowds in Detroit, Washington, Atlanta, Miami, California, and the sanctions that contributed so heavily to his being released from 27 years of imprisonment must continue.

Everywhere during Mandela's visit, the message was clear: Don't let up on sanctions against South Africa; don't be fooled by the lifting of a few of the myriad evils of apartheid; the sanctions have brought us this far, but black South ...
