Pruett to the Glen
* Scott Pruett will drive a third Chip Ganassi Racing Dodge at the Winston Cup race at Watkins Glen on Aug. 11. Pruett, who lost his full-time Cup ride in 2000, has been working since then primarily as a television analyst, sprinkling in the occasional sports car race. The road-racing veteran raced last year at the Glen in another one-race deal, finishing 11th.
No Cup deal yet
* IRL champion Sam Hornish Jr. continues to say there is no update on his prospects of becoming a NASCAR driver soon. But Ty Norris, executive vp of Dale Earnhardt Inc., the team trying to strike a deal with the 22-year-old driver, said discussions are continuing although no contract has been drafted. DEI wants Hornish to share a Busch Grand National ride with Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2003, with a few Winston Cup races thrown in. Hornish's Busch commitments would be after the IRL season ends. Hornish has maintained a desire to remain in the IRL, and he has a contract with Panther Racing through next season. He has not yet responded to the team's contract extension offer.
Trading places
* A proposed PR event that will have Winston Cup's Jeff Gordon and Formula One's Juan Montoya switching cars for a practice session at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway still didn't have a date at AutoWeek's deadline. The original date was Sept. 30, the day after the U.S. Grand Prix. But Speedway officials wanted to use the ride-swapping session as a promotional tool for the race and were pushing for Aug. 12, which worked until a Montoya conflict was discovered. ...
