Trouble at Kayak pools leads to Chapter 11 filing

Kayak Manufacturing Corp., once a $52 million swimming pool company and the area's 15th largest private company, has filed for protection from creditors under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.

Also filing with the West Seneca-based manufacturer was its sister company, Masterpiece Pools Inc. The two subsidiaries of the holding company Berkeley Group Inc. owe $4.8 million to their top 20 unsecured creditors.

Court papers filed Oct. 5 listed at least 1,139 other creditors, but no information about what they were owed or about the companies' assets was available.
