Dario Franchitti scored his first win of the 2002 CART season in the Molson Indy at Vancouver, defeating teammate Paul Tracy with a superior pit stop strategy. The 1-2 finish was the first for Team Green since Vancouver in 2000. In finishing third for Mo Nunn Racing, Tony Kanaan rounded out the all-Honda, all-Lola podium.
Cristiano da Matta ruled Saturday qualifying, taking pole position with a record lap of 1:00.339 on the tight, 1.781-mile street course. The Newman-Haas driver set his time early in the session, then sat out while Tracy and others tried to beat his mark. Tracy would eventually qualify second, less than two-tenths of a second behind.
Da Matta would also lead the first 35 laps of the race, which featured a botched, yellow-flag start and a lap-two crash that took out Jimmy Vasser and Kenny Brack. When Tora Takagi and Michael Andretti collided in Turn Six on lap 36, bringing out another full-course yellow, da Matta pitted. Franchitti, in third, also pitted while Tracy stayed out to take the lead.
