Bill Elliott apparently has no intention of going gently into the good night that promises-what, a well-earned retirement to the woods of north Georgia? His stirring, late-race win in the Pennsylvania 500 (actually 437.5) at Pocono proved what he's been saying for years: Dismiss him as a NASCAR force at your own risk.
Granted, the driver once known as ``Awesome Bill'' lost 227 races between his 1994 Darlington win with Junior Johnson and his 2001 Homestead win with Ray Evernham. And granted, he was top-10 in points only twice in six years as owner/driver after being top-10 in 11 of his 12 years with Harry Melling and Johnson. And a big granted-he didn't seem to be having much fun until joining Evernham's start-up Dodge program last season.
Freed from the quicksand of ownership-ask Ricky Rudd, Robby Gordon, Mark Martin, Joe Nemechek, Kyle Petty, the Bodines, et al. about that-Elliott has (almost) morphed to the Elliott of old. He won two poles, a race and was ranked 15th last year for Evernham. This year, with 16 consecutive races remaining, he has four poles, a win and is ranked ninth. All this (dare we say it?) closer to age 47 than 46.
