Exotic treasures from Carroll

Driving on Route 31 to New Windsor sleepy town in Carroll County, you'd never expect to find a cache of treasures from Kenya, Bangladesh and Peru.

Yet, tucked away on rolling farm grounds is the New Windsor Service Center's International Gift Shop, which sells handmade items from all over the world. Kenyan wood carvings placemats made of Indian lace, rugs, dolls, baskets, jewelry and pottery from points all over line the shelves, walls and floor.

The merchandise in the shop is more than just arts and crafts. Each piece is made by artisans from 30 different underdeveloped countries, and the money made from their sale at the non-profit gift shop goes right back to the Third World craftspeople.
