It's a rare day that suited bureaucrats from the staid corridors of Brussels are accused of being threats to civilization. But Franz Fischler, Europe's commissioner for agriculture, is an exception. A few years back, when the Austrian politician tried to limit the number of olive trees grown in Andalucia, the Spanish press and farmers dubbed him a "barbarian," a man so devoid of taste that he failed to understand the superiority of Spanish olive oil.
