2002 AUG 1 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Nearly 9% of women are hospitalized during their pregnancy, according to a study in the July 2002 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology. This trend warrants further study to identify reasons for hospitalization and whether pregnancy-related complications can be better managed by more cost-effective outpatient alternatives.

Researchers at the Emory Center on Health Outcomes and Quality (formerly the USQA Center for Health Care Research) in Atlanta, Georgia, analyzed data from a national managed care organization involving 46,179 pregnant women who had received inpatient care. They found the overall rate of hospitalization among pregnant managed care enrollees was 10.1 per 100 ...
