Beitzell & Co. falls victim to changing liquor industry

A shifting market and a steep drop in consumption has led longtime District wine and spirits wholesaler Beitzell and Co. Inc. to sell off its liquor lines to competitor Forman Brothers Inc., who industry sources say could now be in a position to dominate the contracting local industry.

The move makes Forman Brothers perhaps the largest liquor wholesale distributor in the District, gaining market share over both longtime volume leaders Milton S. Kronheim & Co. Inc. and Washington Wholesale Liquor Co. Inc.

While the industry is notoriously tightlipped about its relationships with suppliers and retailers, and estimates of a contract's value may vary greatly, local distributors and retailers who dealt with Beitzell said Forman is expected to gain a good-sized chunk of Beitzell's estimated $50 million in annual sales volume by …
