Broderbund Software Inc. jettisons Nintendo, games
SAN RAFAEL - In what could be a remarkable bit of timing, Broderbund Software Inc. has sold its video game division to THQ Inc., a toy company and Nintendo licensee in Calabasas, Calif. In a notice filed with the Marin County Clerk Aug. 21 Broderbund stated its intention to transfer manufacturing equipment, inventory and assets of its New Ventures Division on Sept. 18.
Though neither Broderbund or THQ would disclose terms of the sale, the New Ventures division has annual sales of more than $10 million.
Broderbund, which is 20 percent owned by Jostens Inc., of Minneapolis, is a publisher of educational, entertainment and business computer software. The company started its New Ventures Division three years ago to introduce a line of game cartridges for the Nintendo Family Entertainment System.
