Strong, truly fitting lead singers are desirable in opera. While many productions can survive without them by relying on music and narrative, some require a potent protagonist to be truly successful. Such is the case with Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari's Sly.

The opera, which enjoyed modest success in Italy and then in Germany, has experienced a successful reincarnation thanks to Jose Carreras, who starred in the Japan premiere staged by the Washington Opera at NHK Hall in Tokyo on July 6.
