ZAMBOANGA CITY-Gunmen in military fatigues abducted on Monday night four Indonesian crewmembers from a tugboat off Basilan, but officials could not ascertain whether Abu Sayyaf bandits carried out the abduction.
Eleven men aboard three speedboats stopped the tugboat, which was pulling a barge, fired warning shots in the air and forced the captain and three officers into their boats, according to Philippine Navy chief Vice Admiral Victorino Hingco.
The gunmen left the six other crewmembers in the tugboat, which was pulling a coal-laden barge on a two-week run from Indonesia to Cebu, said Sthillainathan Thillai, a manager for the vessel's Singaporean owner.
