2002 JUL 18 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Researchers from San Raffaele Hospital-Tosinvest Sanita presented results showing that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) improves the ability of the blood vessels to dilate.
This suggests that HRT may help restore healthy endothelial function, improving blood vessel relaxation and expansion in response to increased blood flow. This restoration of endothelial function is key to preventing cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death among postmenopausal women. Additionally, the research demonstrates that neither raloxifene nor Tibolone share the same beneficial cardiovascular effects of HRT. This information was presented at the Global Risk Reduction in Cardiovascular Disease, Florence, Italy.
"These findings show that HRT, unlike raloxifene and Tibolone, have additional cardiovascular benefits, which may be of importance in the prevention of cardiac events," said Dr. Giuseppe Rosano, study investigator and head of cardiovascular research at San Raffaele Hospital. "Also, we need to treat women before they start to develop heart disease in order to be able to avoid cardiovascular events in the future."
