2002 JUL 18 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The authors of a publication in the Journal of Clinical Oncology (2002;20(12):2812-2823) conclude that a study of over 500 women with metastatic breast cancer demonstrates that the combination of Xeloda (capecitabine) tablets and intravenous Taxotere (docetaxel) is far more effective than Taxotere chemotherapy alone, resulting in the women on the combination therapy living an average of 3 months longer. This is an unprecedented outcome in this patient group.
"The study results confirm that Xeloda is a powerful breast cancer treatment that can change the natural history of advanced breast cancer," said Dr. Joyce O'Shaughnessy, of U.S. Oncology, Inc., codirector of breast cancer research at Baylor-Sammons Cancer Center, Texas, USA, and lead investigator of the study. "Xeloda, combined with Taxotere, is an important treatment improvement and represents a major advance in the management of women with metastatic breast cancer. This combination therapy provides new hope for women with breast cancer and their families."
