2002 JUL 18 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Maria G. Essig, MS, ELS, senior medical writer - Percentage of type I muscle fibers is higher in lean women than in obese women, say U.S. researchers writing in the American Journal of Physiology - Endocrinology and Metabolism.
C. J. Tanner and collaborators at the East Carolina University Human Performance Laboratory studied the relationships between obesity and muscle fiber type in obese (n=25, average BMI 34.8 kg/m[superscript]2) and nonobese women (n=28, average BMI 24.0 kg/m[superscript]2), Caucasian and African-American women, and in obese adults who had lost weight as a result of gastric bypass surgery.

After taking into account ethnic background, obese African-American women possessed significantly more type IIb fibers than did obese Caucasian women (31.0% vs. 19.2%, respectively) and a significantly lower percentage of type I fibers (34.5% vs. 48.6%, respectively) (Muscle fiber type is associated with obesity and weight loss, American Journal of Physiology - Endocrinology and Metabolism, 2002;282(6):E1191-E1196).
"These data are consistent with the higher incidence of obesity and greater weight gain reported in African-American women," remarked Tanner and collaborators.
When morbidly obese women lost weight, the percentage of type I fibers increased in relation to weight loss (p
