2002 JUL 17 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc., (BISP) has received a U.S. patent relating to its calcium phosphate nanoparticles (CAP). In addition to disclosing the compound itself, the new patent discloses methods of manufacture and use of CAP, including its applications as a vaccine adjuvant, as a carrier for biologically active material, and as part of controlled release matrices for biologically active material.
"This patent significantly expands the intellectual property protection for our proprietary CAP technology, which continues to prove itself as a novel and versatile delivery system with the potential to play an important role in a wide range of medical applications," said Stephen M. Simes, president and chief executive officer of BioSante. He noted that the company recently announced positive results of preclinical trials using CAP technology as a vaccine adjuvant, for oral insulin and for intraocular drug delivery.
CAP consists of microscopic particles of calcium phosphate, a natural compound found in teeth and bones. CAP is nontoxic and biodegradable, offering a multitude of potential medical uses. BioSante's formulation contains nanoparticles of roughly uniform size, between approximately 300 and 1000 nanometers, which can be adjusted in the ...
