Catching Success is subtitled "fishing, leadership, and relationships" as it is designed to take a look at leadership from the perspective of a fisherman and to look at fishing from the leadership perspective. It is then relationships that link both of the ideas and subjects. Dewey Johnson is preeminently qualified to write about both of these subjects as he has experience catching more than 40 varieties of fish and also co-authored with Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard the best selling applied leadership book Management of Organizational Behavior: Leading Human Resources which is currently in its eighth edition with Prentice Hall Publishing. He is also the author of Concepts of Air Force Leadership used by the U.S. Air Force for professional development and leadership training.

The author begins the book with a discussion of the importance of building relationships in fishing using examples from his own life. He then explains that he is going to narrate the 45 chapters in thought provoking form and that each chapter shall end with a trigger phrase that highlights the major key idea for that chapter. The chapters are divided in to five sections--"Catching Success," "Catching Success through Leadership," "Catching Success through Change," "Catching Success through Relationships," and "Reflections on Catching Success"--followed by a glossary of fishing terminology.

"Catching Success Through Leadership" and "Catching Success Through Relationships" are the longest two sections with 19 and 13 chapters respectively. They include chapter rifles like "Matching the Hatch," "Fish Can't Tell the Gender," "Great Pitch," "Triggering A Response," "You Get What You Give," "Let The Eagles Fly," and "When Trouble Strikes." The trigger phrases for these chapters include the following: (1) lead in response to individual and team readiness ... the Old Angler's ...
