Switching engines?
* Niki Lauda, the CEO of Ford's Premier Performance Division, confirmed discussions had taken place with Eddie Jordan's F1 team about a 2003 extension of Ford-owned Cosworth's engine supply program. It appears Jordan expects to lose his Honda deal sooner rather than later, and that the Japanese company intends to concentrate its effort on British American Racing. Renault has ruled out a customer program until at least 2004, and Asiatech is talking about taking a sabbatical next season. Arrows, Jordan and Minardi might all be camping out on Cosworth's doorstep in Northampton.
Hill will finish year
* Derek Hill, son of former world champion Phil Hill, will complete the rest of the FIA Formula 3000 series with the Durango team, following his strong run to seventh place at the Nurburgring. Hill was testing a Formula 3 car in England when he received a late call to Germany to replace Durango's Alex Mueller, who switched to the reorganized European Minardi operation.
HANS required in '03
* As expected, HANS, the U.S.-developed Head and Neck Support driver safety system, will be mandatory F1 safety equipment in 2003. The FIA has finally approved the regulated adoption of the device, which was devised, and is being developed and marketed, by the Hubbard-Downing company.
