It wasn't until after Army Ranger Matthew Commons was killed in Afghanistan that his mother realized he was a patriot.

In high school essays she read recently and in discussions she reflects on, the Boulder City High School graduate emphasized the importance of voting, of serving one's country and of not taking freedom for granted, she said.

"He was very unique for someone his age because he believed in democracy and freedom. He knew what it meant," Patricia Marek, 52, said Friday from her home in Alexandria, Va.
