One of Tom Garrity's first public relations jobs at Albuquerque Public Schools could be to explain his own work to the public and to critics.

Garrity, a public relations and marketing specialist, spent his first day at work Tuesday under a cloud of criticism as he began the task of being the district's first chief advancement officer.

While Garrity was undergoing new employee orientation, critics of the school district administration and school board were questioning his pay $105,000 annually and the need for yet another top-level administrator in the huge system.
