NARITA, Chiba -- Narita airport on Wednesday marked what airport officials dubbed its "second opening" with an opening ceremony for its new 2,180-meter runway.
Prayers for the safe operation of the second runway and in celebration of its opening were held starting at 10:30 a.m. with Transport Minister Chikage Ogi, Chiba Prefecture Gov. Akiko Domoto and about 70 others, including airline representatives, in attendance.
The opening of the second runway comes 24 years after the 1978 opening of Narita airport and 36 years after a Cabinet decision to build the airport.
