The foreign minister, Phil Goff, says New Zealand is leading efforts to shut out Zimbabwe from the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. New Zealand has now formally imposed a travel ban, preventing President Robert Mugabe and 19 members of his administration from travelling to this country.

Mr Goff says the travel ban is largely symbolic, but other measures put New Zealand at the forefront of Commonwealth action against Zimbabwe, especially surrounding the games.
