Defence minister says Russia to appeal to UN if Georgia violates agreements.

Moscow, 15 April: Defence Minister Sergey Ivanov said if Georgia violates the 2 April protocol on the withdrawal of troops from the Kodori Gorge, Russia will raise this question at the UN Security Council.

The presence of CIS peacekeepers in the gorge is a "containing factor" which is called upon to prevent the situation [turning] into a large-scale armed conflict between Georgia and Abkhazia, Ivanov said on Monday [15 April]. The minister noted that such a conflict "may break out at any moment if the Georgian side does not fulfil its obligations".
