Liberty. What better vehicle, we thought, than something named Liberty for the task of bringing home a college soph who had been set free for the summer. Maybe we should have thought beyond the name: A dorm room full of detritus, one dad and one lad, size XL, made for one seriously stuffed compact 4x4 SUV. To our surprise, the V6 was not strained by this mission but a strong cross-highway wind made us wish we'd landed in a Liberty more recently built, one with the lowered suspension. Still, it was up to the task at hand, and at a sticker price cleanly below $30,000, the tuition-strained purse wouldn't be forced into spending any too freely. ``...Sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing.''
