VW R32 for U.S.?
Officially, Volkswagen is saying it won't bring its hot new Golf R32 to these shores. But that doesn't explain why VW chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder deliberately made sure American automotive journalists got a chance to drive his company's latest hot hatch while they were in Germany recently to check out the coming Phaeton.
Shown at the Madrid motor show in May, the R32 is powered by the same 3.2-liter V6 found in the Phaeton, producing 237 horsepower at 6250 rpm and 236 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm. VW says the car goes from 0 to 62 mph in 6.4 seconds and tops out at 140 mph, although unofficial reports put top speed at 152 mph-making it the fastest Golf ever offered by VW. The engine is linked to a six-speed manual transmission, while 4Motion four-wheel drive sends the power to 18-inch wheels.
That's the ``what.'' We'll let you know ``when'' as soon as we hear.
