America's Best People Mover
Honda Odyssey
built: Alliston, Ontario engine: 3.5-liter V6, 240 hp, 242 lb-ft drivetrain: fwd, five-speed automatic weight: 4299 lbs price: $24,710 2001 U.S. sales: 131,041
This category combined minivans, crossovers, station wagons and even some nominal SUVs-any vehicle whose primary mission in life is to haul people and their stuff. Minivans rose to the top, and while Chrysler invented the form it would seem readers believe Honda has perfected it. Odyssey outpolled the second-place Town & Country by a 2-to-1 margin. Space, horsepower, build quality and value are the usual attributes ascribed to the Odyssey, attributes it must share with the Acura MDX that nabbed third place. Intriguingly, the two Hondas were the only Japanese-brand vehicles to crack the top-10 in this widely diverse crowd of nominees. After MDX came three German-brand station wagons (Audi allroad, BMW 5 Series wagon, Audi A6 Avant), the Chrysler PT Cruiser, Dodge Caravan and two more German wagons (Mercedes E-Class and VW Passat).
