It was one weird day in the wine country. One by one they stepped up to take their shots at winning the Dodge/Save Mart 350K at Sears Point, but no one could close the deal. To lead this race was apparently a jinx. Finally Ricky Rudd, with his own share of bad breaks in recent weeks as several races have slipped away from him, snatched the win, leading only the final three laps. For Rudd, who's lately been talking retirement, it was his 23rd career Winston Cup win, and his second on the road course at Sonoma, just renamed Infineon Raceway. (It's an automotive electronics brand, cha-ching.) Rudd won the inaugural event in 1989.
Last year's winner Tony Stewart qualified on pole, and led lap one. But by lap two Jeff Gordon, starting fourth, had gotten around Jeff Burton and Kurt Busch, then ducked under Stewart in Turn 11 to take the point. Gordon would lead for 31 laps, until his rear axle failed. Rejoining the field seven laps down, Gordon finished 37th.
Busch then took the lead, but got shuffled back on pit-stop sequencing and eventually finished fourth. Ditto for Stewart: He led twice for a total of six laps, but could only make it back to ...
