What are the best cars sold in America? We've asked AutoWeek subscribers that question every year since 1989, and published the results in the issue nearest the Fourth of July by way of celebrating the automobile's place in this freedom-loving land. On the following pages, you'll see this year's results.
First, some background: The poll originated in a bleak period for American automakers, when we needed to remind ourselves that this country made some cars worth celebrating. Today, Detroit competes on equal footing on a world stage and our flag-waving centers on American freedom-the individual's freedom of mobility, and the individual's freedom to choose. We didn't ask readers to name the best American-made cars this time; we simply set up 10 categories, and let the best cars win.
Two perennial victors from years past, Ford's F-150 pickup (this time in SVT Lightning trim) and Chevrolet's Corvette, rose to the top again. As did several American-built vehicles wearing nameplates from overseas, and some imports. Corvette just edged out the Porsche 911 as our readers' choice as the best sports car sold in America.
