Washington, D.C.-based Smithsonian Institution, the world's largest museum and research complex, has discovered another fundraising opportunity: outsourcing.

The organization has outsourced services in support of the Smithsonian Catalog to Piano, Texas-based PFSweb Inc. Fulfillment used to be done in-house and "by going outside we will save over the course of the contract millions of dollars that will be funneled back to the institution to support the exhibits," said Scott Rockman, vice president of the museum's business arm, Smithsonian Business Ventures.

The enterprise mails out around 20 million catalogs a year and generates business on its website. The …
