2002 JUL 4 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Researchers in Spain say that filgrastim (granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, or G-CSF) treatment can help breast cancer patients recover from hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

"The administration of G-CSF post-transplant has been shown to accelerate the time to neutrophil engraftment," according to Javier Hornedo and colleagues at the "Twelfth of October" University Hospital in Madrid, Santa Cruz and San Pablo Hospital in Barcelona, and Hospital Clinic of Valencia in Valencia. "However, this does not necessarily translate into a meaningful clinical benefit to the patient."

Hornedo and coauthors showed that G-CSF-enhanced neutrophil engraftment reduces the need for post-transplant hospitalization, thus providing "meaningful clinical benefit," according to their report in the journal Bone Marrow Transplantation.

The researchers evaluated the safety and efficacy of post-transplant G-CSF in 241 breast cancer patients, 200 with high-risk disease and 41 in complete remission. Study participants had already undergone pretransplant G-CSF stem cell mobilization and high-dose STAMP V (cyclophosphamide, carboplatin, and thiotepa) chemotherapy, they noted.

Neutrophil recovery was significantly (p=0.001) more rapid in patients who recieved 5 [micro sign]g/kg of G-CSF ...
