2002 JUL 3 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Antigenics Inc. (AGEN) announced interim results of five clinical trials, including three evaluating the company's personalized cancer vaccine Oncophage (HSPPC-96) in the treatment of melanoma, gastric and colorectal cancers. The phase I and II studies demonstrated that patients treated with Oncophage experienced clinical and immunological response. Findings were presented at the 38th annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
"In all cancers and species evaluated to date, we have observed a consistent, tumor-specific response associated with Oncophage treatment," said Jonathan Lewis, MD, PhD, chief medical officer of Antigenics. "These latest data show that the mechanism of immune response appears to be virtually identical in melanoma, gastric and colorectal cancers. With each trial, support continues to grow for the potential utility of Oncophage in a multitude of malignancies."
Oncophage is a personalized cancer treatment that is derived from each individual's tumor. Containing the "antigenic fingerprint" of the patient's particular cancer, it is designed to reprogram the body's immune system to target and destroy only cancer cells bearing this fingerprint. Oncophage is intended to leave healthy tissue unaffected to prevent the debilitating side effects associated with traditional cancer treatments. Currently in phase III trials for kidney cancer and melanoma, clinical research evaluating Oncophage includes studies in several other cancers such as lymphoma and pancreatic cancer.
Among the data presented at the ASCO meeting were updated results from a phase II study in metastatic stage IV melanoma. The 39-patient trial demonstrated that Oncophage treatment is associated with both clinical and immune response. Fourteen patients reacted favorably to Oncophage, including two patients who experienced complete disease regression, three patients with long-term (>5 months) disease stabilization, and four who remained disease-free for up ...
