2002 JUN 19 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Maria G. Essig, MS, ELS, senior medical writer - Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BGC) vaccination to prevent tuberculosis infection did not confer protection against asthma scientists in Norway report.
"Some recent studies have suggested that Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination or mycobacterial infection early in life is inversely related to asthma," said H.F. Jentoft and associates at Haukeland University Hospital in Norway. "We wondered if an increase in tuberculin reactivity was inversely related to commonly used indices of asthma in a population of young adults who were BCG vaccinated at age 14."
The researchers randomly selected 588 adults, 20-44 years old, from the general population for tuberculin testing. The subjects' responses to an eight-question interview about asthma symptoms and medications were recorded. Jentoft and colleagues also measured the forced expiratory volume (FEV1) and bronchial responsiveness of the subjects (Absence of relationship between tuberculin activity and asthmatic symptoms, level of FEV1, and bronchial hyperresponsiveness in BCG vaccinated young adults, Allergy, 2002;57(4):336-340).
A total of 558 (95%) study participants had been vaccinated at the age of 14 against tuberculosis with the BCG vaccine. Complete examinations were available for only 386 subjects. However, analysis of the information obtained from these subjects indicated no link between a positive tuberculin skin test response ...
