One side effect of the Right's current disillusionment with "the Europeans" as unreliable, wimpish, anti-Semitic, and anti-American is a search for new allies. Some conservatives would be perfectly content to do without allies entirely, using the freedom conferred by high-tech weaponry to escape any constraints that might be imposed by them. This policy of "global isolationism" -- intervention everywhere without any local help -- might be just about possible for the U.S.; but it would require an increase in defense spending over and above anything now contemplated for the war against terrorism. It is a world strategy very popular with conservative journalists.
