--In The Long View of June 3, a remark is made about Carmen McRae, =93who rarely makes television appearances." Actually, after her death on Nov. 10, 1994, the great singer stopped making any appearances whatsoever, although I personally continue to hold out hope.

--In "Governors and Drunken Sailors" (June 3), Stephen Moore's ususe of John Engler as a model economic reformer comes as a shock to many of us here in Michigan. If devastating the public sector in favor of tax reductions for special interests is what it's all about, then the curve should properly be called Laugher, not Laffer.
Engler's attempt to privatize the teachers retirement system guaranteed an exodus of college grads to other states. Our state police and conservation officers are rarely seen. If you want a real laugh, just try calling a state agency on the phone. And for those who have driven in Michigan, it's obvious why our roads are rated the worst in the nation.
If Engler could run again, I doubt he'd win re-election. The most frequently seen bumper sticker reads: "Just Fix the Roads!" If Mr. Moore wants to see first-hand what lowered tax levels bring a state, he should come visit us in Michigan, and be sure to drive.
