Clive Calder ended the independent reign of his Zomba Music Group on Tuesday, June 11, by agreeing to transfer control of the company to minority partner Bertelsmann AG in a deal valued at about $2 billion.

On announcing the deal, Calder appeared keenly aware of the stir it would create.

"While the exercise of this option will undoubtedly be a surprise to many in the music industry, this is a natural culmination of many years of close business ties and a complex series of agreements negotiated 12 years ago," he said in a prepared statement.
