French president Jacques Chirac easily brushed aside ultraright-winger Jean-Marie Le Pen in May's presidential elections. But it seems it will take more than a landslide to cleanse France of what Le Monde called "Lepenisation." Consider some results from a recent poll: 28 percent of French citizens "partly or completely support" Le Pen's ideas (compared with 11 percent in 1999); 49 percent "completely disagree" with him (versus 63 percent in 2000).
Although Le Penism seems to be on the rise, lefties can seek solace in some news. For one, far fewer young voters say they back Le Pen than do the elderly.
