2002 JUN 13 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - A novel topical antimicrobial and contraceptive agent can protect againist unwanted pregancies and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection, researchers in the United States report.
"The spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and limited methods for control of pregnancies presents high risks to the reproductive health of women," according to Dr. Robert A. Anderson and colleagues at Rush Medical Center and the University of Illinois in Chicago, Southern Illinois University in Springfield, Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, and the Contraceptive Research and Development Program in Arlington, Virginia. "Methods controlled by women and directed toward disease prevention and contraception are needed."
Sodium cellulose sulfate (Ushercell) may represent one such method, showing promising results in a preliminary study, Anderson and coauthors said.
Ushercell blocks sperm cells from penetrating cervical mucus and reversibly inhibits the activity of hyaluronidase, an enzyme that aids spermatozoa in breaching the surface of the ovum. This agent also prevents egg penetration by lowering sperm cells' acrosomal integrity, the researchers noted.
