2002 JUN 13 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Maria G. Essig, MS, ELS, senior medical writer - Women with type 1 diabetes experience a higher degree of sexual dysfunction than do women without diabetes, researchers in Belgium report.
Diabetes-related complications can affect quality of life, including sexual satisfaction. To determine if type 1 diabetes is linked to a greater prevalence of sexual dysfunction, P. Enzlin and colleagues at the University Hospital of Gasthuisberg in Louvain, Belgium, performed a controlled study comparing data and attitudes from healthy women and from women with type 1 diabetes.
A total of 300 women participated in the study, 120 diabetic women and 180 healthy women. Investigators collected data about glycohemoglobin (HbA[subscript]1c) levels, medication use, body mass index (BMI), and evidence of early onset vascular problems. The women completed questionnaires providing information about attitudes toward diabetes, marital satisfaction, feelings of depression, and sexual function.
A higher percentage (27%) of the women with diabetes reported sexual dysfunction compared with the percentage (15%) of healthy women (p=0.04). However, decreased lubrication produced the only significant difference (Sexual dysfunction in women with type 1 diabetes: A controlled study, Diabetes Care, 2002;25(4):672-677).
Reports of sexual dysfunction did not differ significantly by age, BMI, length of time with diabetes, HbA[subscript]1c levels, medication use, menopausal status, or complication rate. ...
