2002 JUN 12 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Roxanne Nelson, staff medical writer - Numerous factors have been considered as possible causes of the unexplained illness reported by veterans of the Gulf War, and researchers in Boston say that different sets of risk factors may affect subgroups of this population.
These conclusions were reached after analyzing the results of a survey that examined the prevalence of both physical and psychological symptoms and identified risk factors among a group of Gulf War veterans at Ft. Devens, explained researcher S.P. Proctor, of the VA Boston Healthcare System and Boston Environmental Hazards Center, and colleagues. This particular veteran group has undergone three previous assessments, dating back to 1991.
The study group comprised 2949 soldiers who served in the U.S. Army and were deployed to the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm. Approximately half of the cohort responded to the survey.
The criteria for multisymptom illness were defined as having symptoms from at least two of the three designated categories: fatigue, musculoskeletal, and mood cognition. These criteria were met by 60% of the subjects.
Exposure to the anthrax vaccine was found to be a risk factor for developing multisymptom illness although not the only one (Risk factors for multisymptom illness in U.S. Army veterans of the Gulf War, Journal of Occupational and Environmental ...
