The recent statement of the Minister for Agriculture in the Government of India about imposition of restrictions on import of oil produced from genetically modified (GM) soyabean has upset soyabean oil importers. As per the recent estimations, the importers have already contracted for about 3,00,000 tonnes of soyabean oil.

A large portion of the consignment will start arriving during May 2002 and continuous inflows will be witnessed until Oct 2002. About one million tonnes of soyabean oil are expected to arrive between May and Oct 2002. India …
