Taipei, April 2, 2002 (CENS)--Burgeoning demand for blue light emitting diodes (LED) from global cell-phone heavyweights like Samsung Electronics Co. has kept Taiwanese LED makers running at full capacity. Samsung has widely adopted blue LEDs as the back-light source of its cell phone displays. The company is estimated to buy 280 million LEDs valued at over NT$1 billion (US$28.57 million at US$1:NT$35) from Taiwan by the end of this year

Both Epistar Corp. and United Epitaxy Co., Ltd. have confirmed that they will supply LEDs to Samsung. The two Taiwanese firms also said they will expand production capacity to keep up with growing demand. They said that Samsung plans …
